My Science Week was 12 days long - What's Up for November 2010 from Jane Houston Jones

11/18/2010

Ten Art/ Space/ Astronomy drawing  workshops, and 14 straight talks, over 12 days in libraries and schools in Dublin, Meath and Wexford. 1000 people  attended in total. For me it has been the busiest Science Week ever and I have enjoyed every second of it.

My thanks to the many participants, library staff, teachers, schools and Discover Science & Engineering for making it all happen.  Thanks to Fingal County Libraries, Dublin City Libraries, Dublin South Libraries, Meath County Libraries, and  Wexford County Libraries.

Here below are a few  images that may help to tell the story, the drawings produced by the children during the workshops were amazing and many schools now have an exhibition of the work in their classrooms. My workshop Rapid Rockets and Wicked Robots is a mini history of space exploration rockets and robots wrapped up in a drawing experience. ( Rapid and Wicked both mean really really COOL in street speak. )

My talks Solar System Robot Explorers and Our Place in Space is Special  both do exactly what they say on the tin and explain these wonders for a public audience in a simple way with the latest images.

Solar System and Robot Explorers
Interactive Talk  and PowerPoint presentation during which the children are asked questions that explores their knowledge of Art, Music, Science, and Geography. The presentation shows the latest images from the many robotic explorers out there in our solar system. We take a close look at all the planets.

Our Place in Space is Special
This presentation deals with the solar system but with emphasis on how our planet is special, ''in the habitable zone ' supporting life and giving us a platform to explore the rest of the Universe. I  explain how we can all be explorers from our own back gardens by showing people how they can see Jupiter for themselves this winter. We look at The Hubble 20th anniversary Carina Nebula print . We  discuss the formation of stars and planets and how our Earth is so important in the scheme of things.  We discuss our duty of care to our Earth and our duty of care to educate our children to their address and the importance of that address.

It was just great to have a clear evening at my last talk in Drumcondra Library Dublin. My audience were treated to sharp and steady views of the gibbous moon and Jupiter with her moons.  Io presented so close to the planets limb , that it looked like a little pimple stuck on the gas giant.
